Hi everyone,

It has been a VERY long time since I last blogged, but things have been very hectic. I had a baby 16 months ago, which meant that I have had only a small amount of time for creating. My studio space was given up for baby too, so I had no time and nowhere to work!

Baby has now started school 2 mornings a week, so I now have some time to destash and organise my studio before embarking on some new creations.

I've started to list my destash items on Etsy, so if you are interested, please take a look.
Looking forward to having a few moments to blog more often in the near future. Thanks for staying with me;-)

This week I am featuring EcoChicHandknits. Barbara makes beautiful crocheted nesting bowls from 100% organic cotton yarn.

I am based in... Stony Brook, New York - which is located on Long Island.

I work from... My couch! I have a very small house that I plan on moving out of in a few years *hopefully* but its really the only place for me to work from. I have all my yarns stored in boxes in the closet and keep a few skeins out at a time. Its worked out well for me so far but I dream of the day I can have my own craft room.

My inspiration comes from... things that I would want and need myself. I started making these bowls because I wanted set. I needed a way to organize my dresser and my desk that would still look great. My shop is still very new but I am planning on adding a lot more items in the future based on things that you use everyday and I also try and create things that I can reuse to replace items that I would use and then throw away. I plan on having a line of coasters (so you would use these instead of a paper napkin each time) as well as a washcloths/dishcloths (rather then using paper towels). I like creating simple practical items that will brighten up your day each time you look at them. I am also inspired by our environment and try to do my little part to help out which is why I only use 100% organic cotton yarn (although I am looking into a wonderful new yarn that is made from recycled cotton so keep an eye out for that!).

The things I hold most dear are... my family and friends. I would be no where without them. I am especially lucky for my boyfriend who has been wonderful and very understanding as I have been starting my business. He has put up with many hours of being ignored while I crocheted on the couch trying to get items to post and filling orders and still encourages me to do more to help my business grow.

The 5 words that describe me are... creative, determined, perfectionist, caring, and fun .

The 5 words that describe my work are... organic, eco-friendly, practical, lovely, meaningful.

In the next year I... hope to have many more sales and have a very successful business. I hope to have a lot of different products to offer and hope that they sell steadily and eventually get that craft room ; )

You can also find me... Since my business is still so new I haven't had time to start anything else yet (like facebook, twitter, etc). I am working really hard to get some more items up in my shop first but I am going to look down all these avenues soon. Keep checking my store for updates!

Cup ring sold

Well, it has been in my Etsy shop since the beginning with lots of interest and love (quite a few hearts) but until now nobody has been brave enough to buy it. And now it's on its way to the other side of the globe to its new owner. I now have to consider if I want to make more of these rings or just make one for myself so I don't miss this one too much:)

Introducing Bonnie and Bella the Springboards (Border Collie/ Springer Spaniels) who helped me to fairly administer my giveaway today.

I gave them two envelopes full of the competition entrants' names and asked them to choose one envelope. The names in the envelope they chose were then split into two and put into two envelopes and they were asked to choose again. We carried on doing this until we were left with one name.

Japan Team Featured Item- Togei ceramics

This week's featured item is from Togei- Ceramics and vintage finds. As a collector of Japanese ceramics, I was interested in Dave's work as soon as I saw it. These cups would definitely fit in perfectly with my collection...just not enough space left in the cupboard:)

I haven't been able to blog at all this week as I was sick for most of the week. However, my Etsy Store still continued to grow despite me being unable to work on anything. You know what they say... a watched pot never boils!

This week I have chosen a piece of work from one of my favourite jewellery designers in Japan. Yuji Kono makes fabulous organic-inspired pieces in silver often with enamel touches. This piece shows the commitment Yuji has to excellent craftsmanship and design. I really want to buy something from him but I'm so spoiled for choice and can't decide!

Hiroshima Trip-The Food

We have been back in Tokyo for almost 2 weeks now, which is enough time for our Hiroshima trip to sink in. The amount of food we ate during our 4 night stay was INCREDIBLE as we opted to stay in Japanese ryokans complete with onsen (natural spring hotbaths).

Over the four days our tastebuds were assaulted with oysters cooked in numerous ways (and some raw ones too), grilled fugu (blowfish), four different nabe (hot pot) dishes, fish intestines, sashimi of all kinds all washed down with Japanese 'bin' (bottled) beer... Oh no! I'm starting to feel full all over again.

Wow! Where has this week gone? It's time for the Japan Team Featured Item already:)

This week's item is from Daneko-Made in Japan. This beautiful glass ring reflects the unseasonably hot weather here in Tokyo, reminding me of the summer time when the hydrangeas bloom. We are having a mini heatwave today (about 17 degrees C) with bright sunshine and a cool breeze.

Mount Fuji as seen from my terrace

This post is going to make me sound like I am not the sharpest tool in the box, but I wanted to share something with you that I noticed last week.
We have been living in this house for around two and a half years, regularly using the terrace attached to our living room (which is incidentally upstairs!) for drying laundry, sitting in the sun and recently taking photos for my etsy shop. Last week, on a particularly beautiful evening complete with characteristic Japanese red sunset, I wondered to hubby if we could see the mountains from the terrace. When we looked, we could see THE mountain of Japan silhouetted against the red sky.
Since then, I check every morning and evening and tip a nod to Fuji-san, now thankful for our wonderful view.

Japan Team Featured Item

To kick us off I have chosen this cute bag from Mee a Bee, all that's cute from Japan. The colour of the apples gave me a bit of lift on such a wild and windy winter day in Tokyo. Makes me feel that Spring is just around the corner:)

Just as I was out on the terrace this afternoon photographing some items for my shop, I heard a distant drumming sound. And then closer...and closer still, until I could hear the distinct sound of taiko drums coming up the hill. Just then, a straw hat popped up from behind the neighbour's tree and two monks came into view chanting their prayers as they passed our house.
Hubby and I like to have at least one 'Japan Moment' everyday, which can be quite a challenge in such a cosmopolitan city as Tokyo. And today, we didn't even have to leave the house to find it.

Not sure why I took my camera with me this morning, but I found myself snapping as I walked to the station. Not everyone knows what the 'normal' parts of Tokyo look like. Everyone assumes that the city is built up with sky scrapers and flashing neon everywhere. Well, not where we live! Folks, that would be Shinjuku, Shibuya or even Roppongi and surprise, surprise...Tokyo can be quiet and even serene in places.
If I go to the top of street I can see Mount Fuji in its majestic glory during the winter and the chirruping birds wake me up every morning in our tiny stone garden. The sun streams across our terrace every morning and the sound of the rustling trees from our neighbour's garden can be heard in the kitchen. The biggest city in the world? A bustling metropolis? Sometimes I just feel like I live in a tiny village.

After a very stressful weekend while hubby was in the hospital, I felt the need for a bit of creativity on my return home.

As I'm in the process of studying ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) and our house is covered in flowers at the moment, I thought I'd make some new floral arrangements to brighten the place up for hubby's return.

I'm sure Hubby will enjoy being surrounded by flowers when he gets home tomorrow. Hope it helps him get better soon:-).

Wildly outrageous dress ring

I don't know what has come over me? Is it the feeling that a new year brings? Is it the sunny (yet freezing) Tokyo weather? Or could it be the effects of drinking too much sake?!

I designed this fun ring after seeing a baseless sake cup; the idea being that the cup is always in your hand.... and you have to keep drinking! Much easier if the cup is attached to your finger (I thought), just remember not to gesticulate when you talk:-)

Not for the faint of heart, you need to be prepared for everyone you come across to comment on your choice of fingerwear.

A perfect day for a crafter

I am not joking when I say this...it has been sunny in Tokyo for at least three weeks. It has been cold, sure, but the sky has been blue and the sunsets stunningly red. As I type, the sun is just setting and leaving a beautiful orange glow in the room. Ahhhhhh.
So, because the weather was warm and sunny today (a litter milder than usual) hubby and I headed off to meet a friend for a craft store rendezvous. Not everyone's idea of exciting, but we three crafting musketeers hit the store with gusto.
4 rubber stamps, some fancy paper and a sakura shaped punch later and we were ready for our brunch. (Minestrone soup followed by eggs benedict. MMMmm)
A perfect Sunday for a craft enthusiast such as myself. I am now going to complete my day with some photo editing and listings on esty. Does it GET any better than this?!

Planning for 2009

So another year is over (where did it go?) and it's time to make some resolutions for 2009. Or is it? Last year I decided not to make any resolutions as I just break them by February and then beat myself up about being weak-willed.

So this year I have decided to make resolutions about my jewellery work, not about getting healthier, giving up caffeine, denying myself chocolate, not getting stressed etc. etc. etc.

Here are my goals for 2009:

Get into the studio at least once a week to get creative with metal.

List something new on etsy every week.

Promote my work by buying some advertising space.

Twitter often to keep my sanity!

Enjoy being creative and relish in the fact that I now have a wonderfully tidy and well set up studio (thanks Hubby!).

Hmmmm... check this post again in December 2009 to see if I gave up on my resolutions in February!

Jewellery added to my etsy shop

At last I finally got around to listing one piece of my huge inventory of jewellery. It's about time too. I spent the afternoon polishing, photographing and editing in readiness for more listings.

For those interested, I found a great site on ring sizes:

Just to make it difficult for us international sellers, ring sizes are different in the US, UK, Japan and Europe! So this is a useful tool for converting. I added this link to the listing of my Leaf ring to help buyers convert their size no matter where they are in the world. There is also a conversion for people to measure their ring size with a piece of string!

Well, here we are one day after Christmas. Very full after all the turkey and trimmings and now ready to get back to work to put some jewellery on my new etsy shop.
Getting more views on my etsy card shop now that I am promoting all over the place!

Change to prices in my etsy shop

I just changed the prices on my card packs in my etsy shop. I have knocked $2 off my 8 packs of folded cards and $1 off the 5 postcard packs. Hope this price change brings in some sales for the New Year!
